ASYLUM AND WITHHOLDING OF REMOVAL

Asylum is a form of protection offered to people who have suffered persecution due to:

  1. Race;
  2. Religion;
  3. Nationality;
  4. Membership in a particular social group; and/or
  5. Political opinion

If granted the applicant may be permitted to remain in the U.S. Asylee’s spouse and children may also be permitted to remain in the U.S. or if outside of the U.S., asylee may petition to bring them to the U.S. An application for permanent residency (green card) may be filed one year after being granted asylum.
